Interview for Telemundo

Here's a Spanish-language interview I did for the Telemundo morning show UN NUEVO DIA. This was filmed in July at Pico Park (Pico Park, CA) where I teach comic book workshops. I really like the creative shots the cameraman chose!

MY interview on Michael Aushenker's CARTOON FLOPHOUSE Blog

In this age of long-winded, pompous interviews (I should know, I've hosted my own internet radio show!!) it's nice to have a space on the web to find short, informative and entertaining interviews with creative people.

My good friend Michael Aushenker runs such a blog, called CARTOON FLOPHOUSE. On his blog he talks about his latest works (which covers everything from his latest comics to his writings for the PALISADIAN POST). He also hosts weekly interviews with a wide variety of creative folks. His latest interview is with..well,...Me! In just 4 short, straightforward questions, Mikey gets a lot of mileage outta me (helps that I ain't shy talkin' bout me and my work!!). Check out the interview here (um, after you finish up reading this post!)

Michael posts a new interview every Wednesday, so instead of running out and buying the latest headline-grabbing-he's-dead-he's-back comic book, or the current company wide cosmic calamity crossover that promises to CHANGE EVERYTHING YOU EVER BELIEVED ABOUT OUR COMIC BOOK UNIVERSE, read some great little interviews on independent-minded creators!

Michael and I have known one another for about 11 years or so. I met him just as I was prepping my first comic book, EL MUERTO:DAZE OF THE DEAD-THE NUMERO UNO EDITION. Michael's own comics work encompasses everthing from working for publishers to creating his own books like EL GATO:CRIME MANGLER, THOSE UNSTOPABLE ROUGES and his current series, CARTOON FLOPHOUSE. Check his latest update for his projects here.

Michael and I enjoying a pre-convention meal last year at one of the many secret mom & pop diners we stash away for quick, cheap, filling meals!

Michael and I have shared enough trips, conventions, meals, social outings, birthdays, etc. to fill 25 graphic novels! In full color, even!! The good thing is I can look forward to lots more 'volumes' in our ongoing escapades!

Okay, now check out that interview!

Fanboy Radio interview is now available

I was a guest on FANBOY RADIO yesterday, and the interview is now available for downloading. FANBOY RADIO is the premiere comic book podcast show, so I was really excited to make my first appearance on the show. It's the big time for comics interviews, that's for sure! Hosted by Scott Hinze and Oliver Tull, the show is a lively hour of interview and comic news and fun hijinx. These guys are real professionals, and even more important, true enthusiasts of comics.

Big thanks go to my good friend Jim Lujan (himself a very good friend of FbR and host Scott Hinze) for setting up the interview. Jim also called in on the show and brought his trademark sharp wit along for the ride. We talked about my work, but I was also billed as a 'Bronze Age Guru', so we had some good discussion on the great comics of the 1970s and what made them great.

Here's the link to the FbR site. As of this moment I'm writing this, the interview isn't posted on the site yet, but just subscribe to the show via iTunes (with the panel on the left) and listen to the interview or download via iTunes.

I'll be interviewed live on Thursday at 4pm

I will be interviewed live on Kevin Cross's Blogcast on Thursday, August 7 at 4pm (Pacific Time). An added bonus will be that you can either call in or participate in the chatroom while the interview is going on!

Kevin Cross is the cartoonist who I just interviewed on my radio show this past Tuesday! (As of this post, the interview hasn't been added to our website yet).
Kevin's Blogcast is new, he's got four episodes under his belt. He puts on a pretty good little show, though. He'll talk about his current comics projects, but also has a feature spotlighting urban monsters and another segment where he talks about classic animated shows like THUNDARR and MIGHTY MIGHTOR! And being a musician, Kevin has all kinds of music throughout his episodes.

I'll be his first interviewed guest, so that's pretty cool. And it's funny to me that two days after I had him on my show, I'll be the subject on his show!

His show is hosted on TALK SHOE.COM, the same outfit that hosts the TALK OBJECTIVISM show I was a guest on this past Sunday (Episode 071). It's a simple matter to register for the show, which allows you to listen and interact with the live podcasts. If you want to hear my interview live, and ask me any questions, log on about 10 minutes before show time and register. It's a quick, simple process.

I'm interviewing PETER FERNANDEZ, the original SPEED RACER!

My next guest on my radio show, PLANET COMIC BOOK RADIO will be this gentleman:

After seeing the new SPEED RACER film, and absolutely loving the film, I knew I had to contact Peter Fernandez and ask him for an interview. Well, he happily agreed! After I woke up from my feinting spell, I had to email some friends and share the news.

I've been lucky enough to meet some of my childhood favorites in terms of comics and such: Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, John Romita, Mil Mascaras, Roddy Piper, Adam West, among others. So I am so glad to at least have the opportunity to talk to the man who not only voiced Speed Racer (and Racer X) but also wrote the scripts and directed the episodes. Remember, SPEED RACER came from Japan as MACH GO GO GO, so Peter had to translate all the episodes and get his small group of actors to voice the roles. So I will be very interested in asking him how all this was accomplished.

Back in the early-mid 70s, when I first caught the series, I was immediately captivated by the show: the characters and the outlandish car races. So it goes without saying that I'm so grateful that, in my role as show host, I can interview the man (and try to not geek out too much)! Anyways, please tune in on Tuesday, May 27 at 5pm (Pacific Time) if you can...

Rafael Navarro is BACK on my radio show today!!!!!

Hey Friends!

If you listened to my interview with Rafael Navarro on PLANET COMIC BOOK RADIO live on Tuesday, Jan. 8 you may have heard some technical snafus! Not only that, but only the first part of his interview was actually recorded!

Sorry to Rafael and the listeners for that.

Well, in the interest of journalistic integrity, Rafael was nice enough to come back to the studio on Thursday, Jan. 17 and record another interview. So our crack tech team has patched together both interviews for an hour long interview with Mr. Navarro.

It will play today at 5pm on PLANET COMIC BOOK RADIO!

Me and Raf talk about his creation of Sonambulo, how we both got started in self-publishing, his career in animation (including his recent Emmy Award!) and lots of cool comic talk (which eventually leads to Jack Kirby, Alex Toth and Frank Robbins!)

Podcast interview at Small World Podcast

Earlier this week I recorded an interview with SMALLL WORLD PODCAST.COM and it's been posted here. This was fun to do, and as always, recorded interviews are interesting because I always fret over what I'm going to sound like when I hear the final product!

Well, this one went pretty good. Although I often think I have to many 'Um's and 'Ah's. Well, at least you can put a voice to my image now, those of you who haven't met me. Someone's going to hear this and say "Oh, I thought he was going to sound like Ricardo Montalban". I WISH!! But, regardless, there are some questions about self-publishing in there, mixed in amongst the usual comic book and movie inquiries. Bazooka Joe, the person who runs the site, had heard about the Muerto movie last month at the San Diego Latino Film Festival, so he contacted me and requested an interview. He puts together a nice show with lots of interesting people. I'm glad to have had the chance to contribute to his show.

Hope you find it informative and entertaining. :)

Interview at HorrorYearbook.com

The good folks at Horroryearbook.com have just posted an interview with me. Crack writer Molly Celaschi had some good solid questions, like this tantalizing little firecracker: "You also made an appearance as “Man in Costume” in a scene with El Muerto. Was that just for fun?". The answer to that and other questions are waiting in the interview....

Also, HorrorYearbook is presenting the 3rd Annual Independent Film Festival at SiliCon, a multi-media convention in San Jose, Ca that I'll be a guest at in October! El Muerto debuted in San Jose in the form of a little ol' independently printed black & white photocopied comic, so it's going to be an El Muerto homecoming for me. More on that later....

Thanks to Douggary, Wil and 'Good Golly' Miss Molly!
